Internet
Our objective is to enhance, promote, and develop the use of the Internet over space-based telecommunications networks in the National and Global Information Infrastructure. In particular, to give NASA, other federal agencies, educational institutes, and private industry the ability to fully utilize and exploit emerging global broadband satellites and hybrid (terrestrial and satellite) networks for their communications needs.

STS-51 launch of the ACTS Satellite.

To that end, we are actively:

  • studying the effects of broadband, high-latency communications links in Internet operation and performance;
  • developing algorithms and techniques to enhance Internet usage over hybrid networks;
  • investigating emerging Internet software tools, developmental languages, and techniques;
  • participating in standards-making bodies.
